Free alternative to Dreamweaver: Kompozer by Mozilla

Picture 3

Last week I was cleaning up my files and in my haste, I accidentally deleted some of the files needed to run Dreamweaver (an html editor used for making websites and other custom html files).  Instead of panicking, I googled “alternative to Dreamweaver” and after a little searching around, found a decent temporary solution: Kompozer by MozillaKompozer is a WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) html editor like Dreamweaver, but a whole lot simpler, open-source (like WordPress and Firefox) and free.

I downloaded the program and within minutes I was able to edit an html email design project that I had started in Dreamweaver.  I made the changes I wanted, previewed the file, and it looked perfect.  I copied the code into Constant Contact (an email marketing service) to create a test email, sent the test email out, and it worked.  The program did crash once while I was using it, but I just re-started and kept going.

If you have any experience with Kompozer or another open-source html editing program that you would like to share, please leave a comment on this post.

Here to help you make your finest dreams come true,

-Catherine

Thanks for your post. Without any Web experience, we used Komposer and a template to create a new Web site: http://www.hawkstories.com. It was easier than we thought, but we are looking forward to improving the site. Our next step will be to include a form like this Leave a Reply form, so that visitors can contact us without sending an email. Any suggestions will be appreciated. We are new at this, with just a desire to share TJ’s stories.

    With Gratitude,

    Tom Wheeler

Thanks to your site, I was able to get with Wheeler and Hawk to get help with my site. TJ kept saying he was a novice, but I like the results for now. We’ll improve it. Thanks again, Best Bob Dylan Videos, http://www.BestDylanVideos.com — Frosty

I use Kompozer for my CSS work and I think it beats Dreamweaver in that aspect. For layout take a look at Aptana Studio

I found Aptana to be a bit beyond what I need – I’ve also recently discovered SeaMonkey by Mozilla, which I now prefer to Kompozer entirely. Thanks for your comment!
